Jeff Van Gundy became the 10th head coach in franchise history on June 11, 2003. In just three seasons he has led the Rockets to a 130-116 record and his winning percentage stands at .528 which is the third highest of any coach in rockets history. He has led Houston to consecutive playoff appearances in 2003-04 and 2004-05-posting winning records in nine of his 10 NBA seasons.

This season will depend on the health of Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The additions of players like Shane Battier, Kirk Snyder and Vassilis Spanoulis should help the team in perimeter shooting and defense. How will coach Gundy divide the time among his players who make the final cut?

If both Ming and McGrady remain healthy it has been said that this Rockets team should be a 50 win team or more. Yao Ming was solid in the FIBA World Championships in Japan and McGrady hasn't had any setbacks over the summer.

Last season the team had a 34 win campaign and went into the off-season looking for perimeter shooters and tough defenders. This is when they picked up Battier who is considered one of the game's top defenders as he knocked down 48.8 percent of shots last season with Memphis. The Rockets must decide whether it makes sense to increase McGrady's minutes at shooting guard or Battier's time at power forward.
