Madison Square Garden Information

Madison Square Garden
4 Pennsylvania Plaza • New York, NY 10001

The reverence attached to Madison Square Garden goes beyond its three decades at 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, an honor conferred as much by the Garden's proud lineage as by the many memorable moments this structure has seen. The current Madison Square Garden is the fourth building so named. The first once housed P.T. Barnum's Hippodrome. The second, built in 1890, was designed by Stanford White, who was later murdered in its roog gardens. In the late '40s and early '50s, college basketball was the real attraction at the third MSG, while pro ball was just an afterthought. But after the point-shaving scandals of the '50s, the Knicks and the NBA began to eclipse college ball in the minds of New Yorkers. The classic 1969-70 Knicks stole the limelight once and for all.

In keeping with the city's vertical landscape, even the ice surface is five stories above the street. A visit to the circular Garden will stir your senses. It is one of the loudest arenas, and its 18,000-plus fans match the volume of the fabulous sound system.

Parking
Since the Garden is in midtown Manhattan, many scattered, private lots can be found in the area. Though some of the lots are on side streets and not particularly well lighted, the neighborhood is active on game nights, so safety is no more a concern than in any other part of midtown. Traffic can move slowly in the streets leading up to the Garden, especially if you're going crosstown. Plan an extra half hour or so.

Concessions
Given that midtown has no shortage of restaurants, many Knicks fans have a ritual meal at a favorite place and then head to the game. If you decide to rely on the concessions, though, you won't be too badly off. Charly O's, in the same complex as the Garden at 9 Penn Plaza, is very popular with Knicks fans.
