Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas is already a step ahead of most Big 12 teams entering the 2006-07 season with all five starters returning to the lineup. All five of the starters received All-Big 12 honors on the court or in the classroom in the 2005-06 season. Brandon Rush became the first freshman in league history to be named All-Big 12 First Team last season. Rush led the Jayhawks in both scoring and rebounding last season. Mario Chalmers was named All-Big 12 Third Team by the conference coaches and was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2006 Big 12 Championship. Russell Robinson was second in Big 12 in assist-to-turnover ratio in earning All-Big 12 honorable mention by the Associated Press. Julian Wright earned All-Big 12 honorable mention by starting the second half of the season. Sasha Kaun started 29 of 33 games for the Jayhawks last season.
This Jayhawks team has the balance needed to reach the Final Four as well as the championship. The Jayhawks also have Darnell Jackson and C.J. Giles returning for the inside. Jackson scored 6.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in 15 minutes per game coming off of the bench last season. Giles started 13 games and averaged 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this past season. He also led the Jayhawks team with 48 blocked shots! On the outside guards Jeremy Case and Rodrick Stewart return. Both of these guys are quick defenders. Case is capable of making the shot and Stewart is very explosive when he has the ball in his hands!
When it comes to defense in Self's three seasons at Kansas he has led the Big 12 and ranked in the top eight nationally in field goal percentage defense. Last season the Jayhawks led the nation in field goal percentage defense at 37 percent. They also ranked sixth in scoring, ninth in steals, 20th in rebounds, 20th in blocked shots, and 33rd in scoring defense.
Bill Self was named Big 12 Coach of the Year and is the nucleus in this Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. In just three seasons as head coach, Self has led the team to two Big 12 regular season championships, finished second the other year, won a Big 12 postseason championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
